José Hernández

From working in sugar beet fields with his family in Stockton to becoming a NASA engineer, José Hernández’s life story is about inspiration, adversity, and leadership. José was inspired in high school to fly into space after hearing that Franklin Chang-Diaz was chosen for the astronaut program. After becoming Chief of Materials & Processes at the Johnson Space Center in 2001, José was rejected 11 times by NASA until he was finally selected in 2009 to board the Space Shuttle Discovery. He has since circled the globe 217 times and received the 2016 National Hispanic Hero Award.
